Why Do You Want a Yorkshire Terrier
Yorkshire Terriers are small and cute. They are the second most popular dog in the United States, next to the Labrador Retriever. This essentially means that they are the most popular small dog in the United States. When you get a Yorkie of your own, it won't take long to figure out why this is so, but why do you really want a Yorkshire Terrier?
It could be that you crave a lap dog. While Yorkshire Terriers are the perfect size to be a lap dog, they actually don't prefer to be in your lap. They do want to be near you – but not on you all of the time. If you are looking for a calm lap dog, a Yorkshire Terrier probably isn't your best option.
If you want to breed Yorkshire Terriers, but you have never owned one, there are several things that you should consider first. Breeding Yorkies isn't easy, and while the puppies do sell for a pretty penny, reputable breeders really aren't making any money from breeding. The money that they get from the sale of the puppies is invested back into the breed. They breed for love and improvement of the breed – not for money.
If you want a Yorkshire Terrier for your child, note that no reputable breeder will sell you one. It isn't that Yorkies and children cannot get along. In fact, Yorkies are great with children. The problem is that children are not great with Yorkies. Children can easily injure such a small dog, and many breeders won't place their puppies in homes where young children live for this reason.
If you are considering a Yorkshire Terrier as a pet, you should learn as much about the breed as you possibly can first. While these dogs are so small that it seems like caring for them won't be any trouble, you should note that these are actually considered high maintenance pets. They require a great deal of attention. There will be veterinarian bills and grooming bills to pay. They have special diet requirements, and feeding them commercial kibble won't cut it. They must be brushed and combed daily, bathed weekly, and they require daily attention.
Again, a Yorkshire Terrier is not a calm lap dog. Some owners compare having a Yorkie in the house to having a precocious two year old human in the home. These little dogs have a curious nature, and they are very energetic. Essentially, if you aren't watching them or giving them the attention that they need, they will be in to everything.
However, if you have a true love of small dogs, and you are looking for a companion, the Yorkshire Terrier may be the perfect dog for you. Just make sure that you have the time to devote to this special creature, as well as the financial resources to properly care for him.
