Is A Yorkshire Terrier the Right Pet for You

When you consider getting a dog, and you see pictures of Yorkshire Terriers, you may instantly decide that this is the dog for you. However, there are numerous things to consider before purchasing a Yorkshire Terrier. Furthermore, the breeder that you work with may also decide that a Yorkshire Terrier isn't right for you.

First, you must consider the fact that these are high maintenance dogs. The cost of acquiring a Yorkshire Terrier is high. Prices range from about $450 on up to $5000 or $6000. Over his lifetime, there will be additional expenses, including veterinarian exams once or twice a year, vaccinations, toys, bedding, grooming fees or supplies, and more. Can you afford to purchase and own a Yorkshire Terrier?

The next thing you must consider is the Yorkshire Terrier's small size and inquisitive personality. Because he is so small, he can be easily injured, and because he is so curious, again, he can be easily injured. A Yorkshire Terrier must be confined to a small, safe space if he is left home alone, and when you are home, he will require your time and attention.

If you see a Yorkshire Terrier, and view him as the perfect size for a lap dog, again, you may be very disappointed. Yorkshire Terriers can be taught to be lap dogs, but when this happens, they tend to lose some of their independence. However, for the most part, your Yorkshire Terrier will enjoy being in the same room with you, and even near you, but he will not want to spend the majority of his time calmly sitting in your lap. These little dogs are full of energy, and they simply don't like to sit still for long periods of time.

Make sure that your living situation allows for a Yorkshire Terrier now, and later. Yorkshire Terriers are inside dogs. They will have a hard time surviving outdoors, and because of their high monetary value, they are often stolen from yards. If you rent your home or apartment, make sure that even if you move, your Yorkshire Terrier will be allowed to move with you.

Again, your breeder will have questions of their own concerning your personal situation. They may ask if you have small children, or if you work long hours. Many breeders will not sell dogs to people who have small children in the home, or to people who will be leaving the dog alone for hours on end. They may even inquire about other pets in the home. The breeders know their dogs, and they are quickly able to judge whether the pup you seek is suitable for homes with other pets.

Before you purchase a Yorkshire Terrier, make sure that you are prepared to keep and care for the dog for his entire life. Otherwise, the puppy that you want so badly today could end up homeless later on.
