What Is Your Ferret Telling You
Your ferret may not understand the words that you say, and you may not understand his dooking, but the two of you can learn to communicate with each other very well. Here are some common signs that ferrets give to let you know what is going on with them:
Your ferret bounces and dances in front of you – this means that he is feeling good, and wants to play. He has chosen you as his playmate. He may not take no for an answer.
Your ferret is busy – Your ferret may not be playing with you, but he may be scurrying here and there, and seemingly looking for something. He hasn’t lost anything. He is just busy doing what ferrets do. He is happy and well.
Your ferret won’t wake up – He’s tired. Many ferret owners have rushed to the vet’s office with a vet that appears to be dead. He’s not dead, and he’s not sick – he’s just sleeping. Ferrets sleep like rocks. We should envy them!
Your ferret won’t eat – If your ferret is not eating, something is wrong. Get him to the veterinarian’s office as soon as possible. Ferrets don’t eat a lot of food as a general rule, but if he is eating less, or hasn’t eaten anything in a twenty-four hour period, again, something is wrong.
Your ferret doesn’t seem to have any energy to play – Again, something is wrong. Get him to the vet’s office. Younger ferrets sleep 18 to 20 hours per day, but when they are awake they should be full of energy. Be on the lookout for lethargy.
The Ferret nips or bites – Ferrets nip for a few different reasons. The first is that nipping is part of their natural play. You can train them not to do this. The second reason that they may nip cannot be stopped. If a ferret is scared or feels threatened, he will nip. The third reason a ferret nips, which also cannot be stopped, is if he is in pain. For example, if he has a sore spot, you pick him up, and it hurts him – he will nip.
Your ferret backs into a corner – He needs to relieve himself. Get him to the litter box fast.
Just as your ferret will communicate with you, make sure that you are communicating with him. Ferrets are fairly smart creatures, and have good memories. Talk gently to him when you are happy with him, and he will come to understand what that tone of voice means – just as he will come to understand what a stern tone of voice means. Your ferret wants to please you – but he must first understand what it is that he is doing that is not pleasing you. This is learned by the tone of voice after he has done something wrong, followed by a tap on the nose. He soon starts associating that stern voice and tap with what it is that he is doing, such as nipping.
