Tips for Finding the Perfect Pet for your Personality

Deciding on what type pet you prefer takes a great deal of soul-searching and practical considerations.  There are many questions you have to ask, such as: Are you a first time pet owner?  Do you have sufficient time to devote to the pet?

Will the pet interact well with family, friends, and children? It is just as important to match the pet’s personality to your own; therefore, here are tips for finding the perfect pet for your personality.

Puppy/Dog

•    Ask yourself what are your likes, dislikes, and temperament.  This plays an important role in the type of breed you choose.
•    Are you looking for a companion, that is, a dog who is passive? Or would you prefer an aggressive type, one that will serve as protector of hearth and home.
•    Would you prefer a pure-bred puppy or a mixed breed?
•    Do you prefer a dog who is independent, or one that relies on and obeys your every command?
•    If you choose a puppy, do you have the time required to raise and train the pup?
•    Are you looking for a dog who is energetic and bright; or just the opposite?
•    Do you have enough space required, that is, a backyard where your dog can exercise daily?
•    If you live in an apartment, how much space will you be able to afford your dog?
•    If you are an active person, would you prefer a dog who can share in those activities?
•    Can you afford the costs involved in caring for a puppy, that is, vaccinations; food, bedding, eventual health problems, grooming, and overall maintenance?

Kitten/Cat

•    Since most cat owners prefer indoor cats, do you have a specific area in your home or apartment where the cat can call “home?”
•    Can you adapt to the personality of a new kitten or cat?  Does it mirror your own?  Keep in mind while some cats love to be held, others are quite independent.
•    Owning a cat will require the purchase of a litter box, food, toys, and scratching post.  Since most cats have a longer lifespan, you will need to find a veterinarian in your area in case of future health problems.  In addition, the cat will have to be spayed or neutered.
•    Training cats can be difficult.  Are you prepared to put in the necessary time?
•    Are you looking for a specific breed such as a Siamese? O do you prefer a mixed breed that does not require much grooming and can be acquired through a shelter.
•    If you are a first-time pet owner, you may want to ascertain if you are allergic to cat hair.
•    If you regularly go on vacations, do you have someone in mind you can care for your pet.

Parrot

•    If you choose a parrot, are you prepared to care for it over the course of its lifetime?  Parrots can live up to 50 years or longer.
•    Is your residence conducive to owing a parrot?  If you live in an apartment, parrot screeches may bother the neighbors.
•    Can you afford the expense of providing such amenities as a large steel cage, lots of toys, perches, specialized foods, and overall health care?
•    Does your personality reflect that of a parrot?  They are highly social and need much attention.
•    Parrots live in flocks and it may be necessary at some point to provide another parrot as a companion.  Are you willing to do this?
•    Parrots need exercise.  Is your home conducive to allowing the parrot to fly free for a few hours?
•    Most parrot lovers prefer specific breeds of parrot.  They can be quite costly.  Can you afford to acquire a breed of parrot that best suits your personality?

Acquiring a pet, whether it is a dog, cat, or parrot entails a great deal of thought, planning, and self-examination.  If you have a specific breed of dog in mind, for example, there are certain steps you should take to ensure the puppy does not originate from a puppy mill, as they often have serious health problems.

Here’s a tip:  If you are checking breed owners on line, you can trace the lineage of the puppy online by checking the pedigree to assure that the breed and owner are authentic.
