My last dog Jess, we had wormed at the vet. It cost a lot of money. (As vets do) Our new puppy is two months old and has not been treated yet. The supermarket worming treatments are at a fraction of the price.

It all depends upon the kind of worm your pet has. There are generally five major worm types: roundworms, hookworms, tapeworms, whipworms and heartworm. All of these worms can cause moderate to severe problems for your dog, and must be treated.
Let us look at the various types of parasites and what each one does.
The most common infestation is the roundworm. This parasite usually passes to puppies from their mothers either before birth or while she is breastfeeding. These worms can be passed to humans. In dogs, the roundworm causes weight loss and a potbellied appearance.

A zoonosis is any disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans. While pet owners may be well informed about certain zoonotic diseases such as rabies, their knowledge of other zoonotic risks such as roundworm and hookworm infection may be minimal.
Roundworms and hookworms of dogs and cats have the potential to cause disease in humans. Children may be more at risk of contamination because of their play habits and weak immune system. People can acquire hookworms and roundworms from pets by having contact with soil and sand contaminated by the feces of infected dogs and cats. Children may also inadvertently orally ingest contaminated dirt.

The scientific name for the most common tapeworm found in dogs and cats is called Dipylidium caninum. Another tapeworm found in dogs anc cats is referred to as Taenia spp. in the scientific literature.
The only way dogs and cats can become infected with tapeworms is by ingesting an intermediate host. These includes fleas, mice, rabbits, or any other small creature your pet may wish to ingest.
Tapeworms are small, flat, segmented intestinal parasites. Often owners will find segments of the tapeworm, called proglottids, which resemble a grain of rice, near the pet’s anus or on feces. There are normally no clinical signs associated with a tapeworm infection.

Unfortunately, dogs can develop worms quite early in life. Here are some ways to prevent them in your dog.
1. One of the major causes of tapeworms is attributed to fleas and lice. Brush your dog regularly with a flea comb and keep a watchful eye for any odd behavior exhibited by your dog. Dogs that ingest fleas, for example, can develop tapeworms. Thus, it is necessary to determine whether or not your home or yard is infested with these parasites, which will require using a variety of methods to rid them from your premises.
2. Feces are another contributing factor in developing worms. Ensure that all feces are picked up either in the back yard or, in the case of puppies, immediately after they eliminate in your home.

There are a variety of worms that cause illness in your dogs such as: heartworms, hookworms, roundworms, tapeworms, and whipworms. What causes worms in dogs?
Let’s take a closer look.
Hookworms are predominately found in dog feces. If your dog eats these feces they can develop this condition. Look for the following signs: loose stool or blood in the stool, the dog seems bloated, gas, has an unusual appetite, and his coat seems to be on the dull side.
Roundworms come from dogs ingesting the egg of the roundworm. In puppies, they may become infected through the mother. Signs that your dog has roundworm may be exhibited as follows: vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, gas, and an unusual appetite.

Parasitic worms in dogs and cats normally reside in the intestines. The one aspect of these parasitic worms is that worm larvae and eggs can remain dormant for years in tissues and wait for an appropriate trigger to surface and infest your pet.
In many cases it is the stress factor that acts as a trigger for worms to migrate. Feline parasites like roundworms and hookworms can surface abruptly in advanced stages of pregnancy and transmit to the young ones.
Kittens can get infected while in the womb of the female cat or through the milk of the infected mother. Adult cats can get infected by ingesting worm infested feces. They can also fall prey to these parasites if they consume a prey that is infected.

There were times when it was believed that the only way worms in dogs passed on to puppies, was through the mother’s system while they were still in the uterus. Whereas this contention still holds good for some types of worms, it has now been established that worms can infest puppies through other means also.
Worms like dog tapeworm, and dog roundworms and even some feline parasites have a typical lifecycle and can enter a pet’s body through various means.

Hookworm is a parasite that lives in the small intestines of mammals. It is also the most common of the intestinal parasites that infest dogs.
There are different types of hookworms that can infest dogs and cats.
* A.caninum can infect a dog.
* Uncinaria stenocephala can infect both dogs and cats.
* A.braziliense and A. tubaeforme species of the hookworm infect only cats.
Hookworms are smaller than other intestinal parasites like dog tapeworms and roundworms. Their affect on the host’s body is also different from other parasitical worms.
Worms in dogs are usually excreted and are visible in stools but hookworms are so small that they cannot be seen with the naked eye. In most cases even a microscopic examination is unable to reveal their presence.
