Scary new pets stats on drug-resistant bacteria

While many of us are aware of the worldwide pandemic of deadly ‘super-bugs’ (also known as strains of bacteria that have mutated and become resistant to conventional antibiotics) that have been affecting hospitals to households, we now have to worry about our pets having the same fate.

In dogs and cats, the bacteria are slightly different than the strains that affect people, which are usually methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA. Animals are likely to contract methicillin-resistant staphylococcus intermedius, or MRSI, but it’s overall causing the same problem in which some strains of common bacteria have evolved to resist the antibiotics we normally use to treat it.

Last year, veterinarians at the University of California-Davis Veterinary Teaching Hospital medical center treated 35 animals for the infection. With cases of drug-resistant bacteria increasing in our furry friends, prevention may be the best medicine.

Unfortunately, the source of most MRSI infections in pets is uncertain, so it is difficult to know for sure how to protect our pets. There isn’t always a link between hospitalization or veterinary visits, but dog parks, boarding kennels or groomers could be risk factors, if there are contaminated animals or shared items, such as shampoo bottles.

An infected dog or cat living in the same household with healthy pets can sometimes pass an infection on to them. In addition, while humans rarely contract MRSI from animals, we can spread MRSA to them.

However, taking preventative measures like building immunity and performing regular health checks can help keep your dog or cat safe. Regularly inspect your pet for any changes, as many skin infections with MRSI or MRSA are initially misdiagnosed as spider or insect bites.

Consider natural remedies to support immunity and liver health. The liver is the second largest organ in the body and is often seen as the most important one for its role in the body’s natural ability to fight disease and function optimally.

Amongst other important functions, the liver is responsible for eliminating and detoxifying toxins that enter the bloodstream. Liver functioning is also vital to the health of the immune system, which helps ensure that your pet stays healthy.

Used as a natural immune system tonic, Echinacea also helps to support the lymphatic system. Regular use can help to keep your pet healthy and support a well functioning immune system. Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha), also called ‘Indian ginseng’, assists with growth, health and vigor.

Regular use can help to nourish the blood and support healthy hemoglobin levels. This herb is often recommended as a systemic and restorative tonic.

Sylibum marianus (Milk Thistle) is regarded as one of the most important herbal liver tonics and restoratives and is frequently recommended to support the health and functioning of the liver.

Like many other ailments and illnesses, keeping a watchful eye on your pet for physical as well as behavioral changes can go a long way in maintaining health.
