Archives for Dog Energy, Fatigue category

Just as with you and I, your pets age is a consideration that must be thought about as your dog matures. It is easy to overlook, especially if your dog is in its prime, however, your aging animal has new needs that must be met just as with any other aging animal or human being.

A change in lifestyle, preventive measures and lots of love can help your dog in its journey from “prime time” to “down time”. First, just how old is your dog – really?

Depending on the breed and size, your pet may have a life expectancy from around eight years(for most of the giant breeds) to fourteen or more(for the toy/smaller breeds). Keep in mind that these are only approximations- your pet, depending on its health and quality of life could live longer(or shorter) than these figures. Most dogs fall anywhere between these two.

What are some of the causes for lack of energy in dogs and cats?

Dogs:

* Depression
* Boredom
* Obesity
* Nutritional Deficiency
* Inadequate or inappropriate diet
* Liver sluggishness or disease
* Intestinal worms
* Hypothyroidism
* Diabetes
* Poisoning
* Anemia
* Kidney failure
* Heatstroke

Cats:

* Liver sluggishness or disease
* Depression
* Boredom
* Incorrect diet
* Intestinal worms
* Feline Leukemia
* Cardiomyopathy (a disease that affects the heart muscle)
* Anemia
* Ulcers
* Diabetes
* Kidney failure
* Heat Stroke

As can be seen from the list above, listlessness or lack of energy may have a variety of causes.

Hyperactivity and delinquency in pets

A hyperactive, out-of-control pet is enough to drive even the most laid back owner straight to therapy.

Some animals become increasingly hyperactive and delinquent over a period of time while others are that way from the start. Either way you need to do something to calm their errant ways!

It’s important to try to understand, if possible, why your pet is behaving the way he is. For instance, some breeds of pets such as border collies, are naturally more highly strung than others. Border collies are typically bred as working dogs so if instead they are kept as pets their owners need to be aware that they need lots of exercise and attention.
