I dug deep in my herbal formula books for this recipe out of desperation, given that I live in the epicenter of the tick-generated Lyme Disease epidemic. I tested the Essential Oil that is recommended for ticks, Rose Geranium, by putting a few drops—no more!— on our dogs’ Collars, to see if it would repel ticks. Lo and behold, we went from 20 ticks a day on each dog, to none. The second best Essential Oil for repelling ticks is American Pennyroyal (also called tickweed).

How Low Quality Foods can be Hurting Your Pets

A few short months ago, pet owners everywhere were afraid to feed their pets for fear of what they might be ingesting. Every time you turned on the news, there was an update on the “Pet Food Scare”.

Although the situation has now subsided after more than 60 million bags and cans of pet food were recalled, concerns with production and safety standards were raised regarding the high levels of hazardous food that slipped through to the retail market. The situation caused pet owners to question the quality and safety of even the well-recognized brands on the market.

Question from Melissa:

“I have a 12 year old Shepherd mix (possibly Lab). After reading all the side affects of Rimadyl and other medications, I’m looking to give him something more natural that won’t kill him if it doesn’t really do the job. His weight is between 65-70 pounds. He still acts like a puppy when we get home and still doesn’t hesitate to jump on the couch, but he’s slow to get up now and has the shaky back legs. He doesn’t seem to be in any pain yet but does pant more now. He still loves to go out for walks but does tire sooner than he did in the past. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.”

Question from Lauri:

“After the pet food scare I’ve been doing research on all the things that are actually harmful to my beloved dogs. I want to give them the best life possible. I have a 1-1/2 year old male yellow lab and a 1 year old Basenji mix that we adopted (don’t know what she’s a mix of). They are both spayed/neutered.

One of the most common ailments affecting pets as they age is Arthritis. Arthritis is a degenerative condition of the joints where tissue and cartilage in the joint breaks down or becomes damaged, causing Swelling and discomfort. When this occurs, your pet’s quality of life often becomes compromised, with pain causing limitations on playful activities and distress even during daily routines.

Unfortunately, Arthritis is a very common problem in purebred dogs. Due to selective breeding, some dogs end up developing severe Arthritic Conditions that often require major surgery to alleviate the pain.

Dogs have a keen auditory faculty. To help retain this extraordinary attribute, a dog’s ear canal is L-shaped to protect the tympanic membrane (ear drum) from any kind of injury. The typical structure of a dog’s ear means that a foreign substance that enters the ear or wax or debris that accumulates due to infections, has to work its way upwards rather than straight out, as is the case in the human ear. This makes it difficult for any thing going in to come out easily.
