It is not easy to break the life cycle of intestinal parasites like roundworms and dog tapeworm.
The main hurdles are the encysted larvae that can remain in a dog’s body for years. Since the worm eggs have a huge appetite of bearing vagaries in their environment, they can remain dormant for a long time before becoming active.

Looking for an appropriate treatment at the first visible signs of worms in dogs is the first thing that should be done. Noticing the symptoms of worms in dogs depends on the amount of time that you spend with your dog and the level of care that you provide for your pet.

Keeping your eyes open for such symptoms should be a priority as these parasites can pass on to humans too. Preventive measures become equally important so that you can ensure that your pet does not get infected again.

Prevention

There are three broad ways by which roundworms get into dogs.

* Larvae present in female dogs can be passed on to puppies in vivo and through mother’s milk.
* Larvae in the tissues of an intermediate host can be indirectly ingested when the animal is eaten.
* Eggs in the environment can be directly consumed by dogs.

Separation anxiety disorders in cats were only discovered recently due to some research conducted by animal behaviorists. The symptoms of separation anxiety in dogs are prominent and easily observed.

Cat separation anxiety is difficult to identify and it requires a keen eye to be able to notice symptoms of separation anxiety in cats. Identification also requires an insight into cat behavior and mannerisms.

Cats are less destructive when they suffer anxiety. In most cases, they tend to follow their owners and indulge in self grooming. Sometimes the excessive licking and cleaning can cause psychogenic alopecia.

It is unfortunate that a large majority of the cat separation anxiety cases are caused due to ignorance on the part of cat owners. People tend to encourage behaviors that involve a show of exhilaration on the return of the owner since it is seen as a sign of attachment. They fail to realize that excessive attachment and over dependence is the basic cause behind separation anxiety.

Treating cat separation anxiety is important because it can aggravate to undesirable behaviors. The first step is to check whether the anxiety is occurring from an underlying ailment. In case the anxiety is due to a physical ailment treating the condition can solve the issue.

Separation anxiety in dogs is a common situation that dog owners need to face. This disorder can bring out the worst behavior in dogs.

Separation anxiety in cats is a less common phenomenon and typically gives rise to behaviors that are not as destructive as those of a dog suffering from separation anxiety. It is so uncommon in cats that it was not till recently that the disorder was considered to be absent in the feline species.

Recent studies conducted by veterinarian behavior specialists have proven that separation anxiety is possible among cats also.

During the course of such studies, various factors that can cause separation anxiety in cats were discovered. Such situation can cause the cat to exhibit distinctive behavior patterns that are unique to separation anxiety. Some such factors that can cause separation anxiety among cats are:

* Separation from mother.
* Early weaning.
* Purchase from a pet store.
* Oriental breed like Burmese and Siamese.

Unlike dogs, who spoil upholstery, break objects and howl on being left alone, symptoms of separation anxiety in cats are not so explicit and destructive in nature. This basically means that identifying symptoms of feline separation anxiety requires keen observation. It is very uncommon for cats to scratch or claw at doors in an attempt to escape confinement.

Biographical stories and scientific research suggest that dogs have a reasonably high intelligence. This, however, does not mean that dogs can premeditate and solve problems. What they do have is a certain association between cause and effect that registers in their minds over time.

Separation anxiety in dogs arises from exactly these types of cause and effect associations that they learn by trial and error. Some dogs take separation from owners in their stride whereas some resort to undesirable behaviors.

These undesirable behaviors can border on destructive behaviors at times. Apart from separation anxieties, some dogs may also show anxious behavior during thunderstorms, car rides or visitors.

Conventional medications rely upon antidepressants to suppress anxiety. The side effects of the drugs are an inhibiting factor and often lead people to a search for alternate measures. Natural remedies and diets are effective measures that can prove to be curative while avoiding the side effects that accompany drugs.

Homeopathic remedies are a safe way to calm emotional turbulences in dogs. Homeopathic remedies do not induce sleep so that the negative behavior can be avoided. They ease the anxiety to a great extent especially when the dog encounters anxious situation like separation from the owner. You can choose to opt for a branded product or consult a qualified homeopathic veterinarian who will then give you a specific medicine for severe anxiety.

Out of the numerous intestinal parasites, roundworms and tapeworms are the most common feline parasites that infest cats. The connection between these two intestinal parasites ends here. Roundworms are round and slimy creatures whereas tapeworms are flat and segmented.

Both the worms shed eggs that are passed out in the feces of the cat. But roundworms and tapeworms look different. Roundworm eggs excreted in feces are microscopic, whereas tapeworm eggs are released as packets from the end segments that detach from the worm. These segments can be seen in the cat’s feces or clinging to the hair near the anus of the cat.

Roundworms

The two common species of roundworms found in cats are:

* Toxocara cati
* Toxascaris leonina

Eggs from both the species are generally eaten by a cat when they are still in their non-infectious stage. They may also be ingested by an intermediate host, say, a mouse or a rat.

Toxocara cati differs from the other roundworm in one feature. It has the capacity to remain dormant in female cats. A queen may harbor larvae from previous infections that remain encysted in various tissues in the body. At the time of pregnancy these larvae migrate to the mammary glands. Larvae transmit through milk too. That the litter of an infected mother will be infected as well is a foregone conclusion.

Being aware of the possibility of worms in dogs is an essential part of owning a dog. You need to be aware of the symptoms of worm infestation right from the day you bring a dog into your home.

Tapeworms are one of the intestinal parasites that require keen observation for diagnosis. For dog owners to know whether their pet is infested with tapeworms it is important for them to know about their appearance, lifecycle and symptoms.

APPEARANCE

Dog tapeworm gets its name from the tape-like appearance that it has. A tapeworm is flat and has segments. It has a head and a neck and the remaining part of the tapeworm is broken into segments. The tapeworm uses muscular grooves present in the head to attach itself to the intestines of the host. New segments are continually formed in the neck region. The ones at the end mature and are shed periodically.

Each segment has its own reproductive organs and contains a large number of eggs that are grouped in packets. Once mature, these segments are detached from the main body and are excreted. Mobile segments can be seen near the anus of the dog or on top of fresh feces. Once the tapeworm segments dry up they look like uncooked rice or cucumber seeds.

Understanding your dog’s body language can be a complex task. Researchers now believe that a single behavior may have multiple meanings and therefore an action cannot be generalized. Dog behavior has to be understood contextually.

We tend to generalize that when a dog wags his tail, he is happy. However, there are times when a dog will wag his tail (for example when you are leaving him to go out) to convey anxiety rather than excitement.

Domesticated dogs also form a healthy bond with the owner and their family. This leads to overdependence on the owner which can at times become overbearing. More than anything else, overdependence can lead to fear of separation.

Over time, if unchecked this anxiety can lead to abnormal behavior from an otherwise friendly dog. Fear and aversion to isolation is one of the main reasons behind anxiety that can cause undesirable and abnormal behavior in dogs.

Treating separation anxiety in dogs with medication is the route that many pet owners take since it is probably easier than the other options. But anxiety medication has its own drawbacks.

Undesirable and destructive behavior from your dog can get extremely irritating. It is especially peeving if you have made sure that he is trained adequately right from the time that he was a puppy. After you are sure that your dog is fully trained, bad behavior does become difficult to tolerate and cope with.

However, it is important to understand that there are many reasons why your dog can relapse into untrained, destructive or extremely submissive behavior even after years of training. It is common for perfectly restrained dogs to go berserk at times with no apparent reason.

One of the reasons why some dogs can forget all that they have learnt is anxiety. Even though dogs are intelligent animals, they are incapable of controlling stress and anxiety that they may feel due to various reasons.

Anxiety brings out the worst in a dog. There can be various reasons for anxiety but the one that is most common is separation anxiety in dogs. Dogs are known to spoil furniture, urinate in the house, break objects and indulge in excessive barking when their owner leaves them. Such destructive behavior should not be construed as revenge (since dogs are almost incapable of that emotion).

It is extremely essential to control canine and feline parasites since they inhabit the intestines and can cause problems if not eliminated in time. Roundworms can block the intestinal passage by the sheer numbers that they exist in. Hookworm infection causes severe anemia followed by loss of iron and protein in the stomach.

A proper understanding of symptoms of worms in dogs is necessary for proper treatment of worms in dogs . However, it is imperative that a thorough understanding of the worm’s life cycle be understood to be able to control it better.

ROUNDWORMS

One female roundworm can lay up to two hundred thousand eggs in a single day. Most of the eggs pass out of the body through feces but some eggs stay inside the body. A larva develops inside the egg shell and cannot infect the dog till it reaches the second stage. This takes about a week.

A dog can get infected by consuming roundworm eggs that stick to the fur or feet. Once inside the stomach the shell is digested. Roundworms have a complex migratory life that involves expulsion once again through vomiting. Dogs consume the discharged larva along with the vomit during the third stage.
