The origin of Great Danes, like that of many other varieties of dogs, is so obscure that all researches have only resulted in speculative theories, but the undoubted antiquity of this dog is proved by the fact that representatives of a breed sufficiently similar to be considered his ancestors are found on some of the oldest Egyptian monuments.

A few years ago a controversy arose on the breed’s proper designation, when the Germans claimed for it the title “Deutsche Dogge.” Germany had several varieties of big dogs, such as the Hatzrude, Saufanger, Ulmer Dogge, and Rottweiler Metzgerhund; but contemporaneously with these there existed, as in other countries in Europe, another very big breed, but much nobler and more thoroughbred, known as Great Danes.

When first becoming involved within the horse world, it is good if you can equip yourself with some basic horse terms to help smooth the way.

No matter your horsey interest, these terms are regularly tossed about the barn; learn them and you will be well on your way to interpreting the horse world language.

Stallion – Entire male horse that has been used to father (breed) younger animals.

Colt – Young entire male animal, usually under 3 years old

Gelding – Castrated male animal of any age, no longer able to be bred from.

Mare – Female horse, usually over 3 years old.

Filly – Young female animal, usually under 3 years old, which hasn’t yet been bred from.

I find a common misperception among those new to rabbits that larger rabbit breeds are more Excitable and smaller rabbit breeds are more calm and docile. Once you come to understand rabbits more, you will find the exact opposite to be true.

Large rabbit breeds can honestly be called gentle giants. While it is true that they are heavier to lift and produce more “fertilizer,” their personalities are well suited for pet-hood. There are a few exceptions, of course.

Checkered giants are both large and a bit Excitable. But Americans, American chinchillas, Beverens, English lops, Flemish giants, giant chinchillas, New Zealands, satins and silver foxes are all considered both large breeds and calm in temperament.

You will find several of the smaller breeds to be Excitable. These include the dwarf hotot, Netherland dwarf, and Britannia petite.

Just as with you and I, your pets age is a consideration that must be thought about as your dog matures. It is easy to overlook, especially if your dog is in its prime, however, your Aging animal has new needs that must be met just as with any other Aging animal or human being.

A change in lifestyle, preventive measures and lots of love can help your dog in its journey from “prime time” to “down time”. First, just how old is your dog - really?

Depending on the breed and size, your pet may have a life expectancy from around eight years(for most of the giant breeds) to fourteen or more(for the Toy/smaller breeds). Keep in mind that these are only approximations- your pet, depending on its health and quality of life could live longer(or shorter) than these figures. Most dogs fall anywhere between these two.

The Boston terrier, one of the few breeds that can claim to be truly American, is a lively, curious and smart companion that’s always ready to play. At one time, Boston terriers were actually the most popular breed in the US. Today, they’re still a clear favorite among the thousands of dog lovers who want a medium-sized, intelligent pet.

Because of its Bull terrier or Bulldog background, the Boston (classed with the non-sporting breeds by the AKC) is alert and keen to learn new tricks and jobs. Bostons like children and will play games with them for hours on end. A well-bred Boston isn’t vicious, but pretty able to take care of himself. Boston fanciers like to call this breed the “American Gentleman,” obviously because of his formal, tux-like markings, but also because his personality is gentlemanly and even as well. The Boston’s friendliness, alertness and courage make him an ideal pet and companion dog. Always alert, he’ll also let you know of any strange sounds in the night.

Symptoms of UTI infection in pets

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) are uncomfortable and extremely painful. They tend to be more common in cats than dogs and can be caused by Bacterial Infection, Bladder Stones or urolithiasis (stones in the urinary tract).

UTIs often recur and can lead to more serious kidney infections if left untreated.

Symptoms include

• Straining to urinate
• Obvious pain or discomfort when urinating
• Constantly licking their genitals
• Frequent Urination without passing much urine
• Urinating in unusual places
• Cloudy or bloody urine
• Fever and loss of condition

What is the conventional treatment?

Conventional treatment of UTIs will depend on the specific cause of the problem. In many cases, antibiotics are prescribed which invariably relieve the animal’s symptoms rather speedily.

However antibiotics tend to have a general weakening effect on the Immune System which can cause further problems, especially in the long-term and particularly if they are prescribed regularly for recurrent infections.

So, you read somewhere that introducing a new kitten into your home could be great for your existing cat, for companionship. And you remember how much fun your cat was when she was a new kitten, and you would love to re-live those days.

It is generally thought that cats thrive better with the company of another feline, especially cats confined indoors. But before you rush off to your local cat shelter or breeder, here are a few tips to make bringing home a new kitten as Stress free as possible.

Choose a time when your home is not too busy and you will have time to devote to your new kitty and your existing cat, avoid holidays, for example, or other times when friends and family are likely to visit.

Fishless cycling is the process of cycling a tank, or establishing a biological filter in a fishless aquarium.

The biological filter, or nitrogen cycle, naturally occurs over the first 4-6 weeks after a tank is set up. Cycling a tank is necessary to keep the water free of pollutants and the fish healthy, but while the filter is establishing itself, fish are exposed to toxic levels of ammonia and nitrite and often succumb to disease and death. Fishless cycling removes fish from harm by establishing the biological filter before fish are introduced to the aquarium.
