The origin of Great Danes, like that of many other varieties of dogs, is so obscure that all researches have only resulted in speculative theories, but the undoubted antiquity of this dog is proved by the fact that representatives of a breed sufficiently similar to be considered his ancestors are found on some of the oldest Egyptian monuments.

So, you’ve acquired a new puppy over the weekend and already you’re in love. But Monday morning rolls around and reality hits. How do you raise a well behaved canine while working away from the home?

In more than 50% of American households wives, as well as husbands, work out of the house, while children depart for school or the sitters. Training “Fido” not to use dad’s favorite slippers as chew Toys or to refrain from soiling the carpet has become a frustrating challenge for many.

Herbs For Your Dog

Posted: Wednesday, October 26th, 2005 @ 10:42 am in Pet Health Issues, Dogs & Puppies | 1 Comment »

Herbology, basically, is the use of Herbs in the treatment of many types of illness. Herein the emphasis of treatment is based strongly on the specific use of herbal roots, flowers and leaves to stimulate the healing process. Keep in mind that these Herbs are not a form of drug(as in man-made forms, such as aspirin) but are strictly natural in content. Practiced for centuries, herbology is probably one of the most primitive and fundamental uses of specific remedies to treat various illnesses, known today.

Pet Rabbit Temperament

Posted: Tuesday, October 25th, 2005 @ 2:15 pm in Exotic/Unusual Pets | No Comments »

I find a common misperception among those new to rabbits that larger rabbit breeds are more Excitable and smaller rabbit breeds are more calm and docile. Once you come to understand rabbits more, you will find the exact opposite to be true.

Large rabbit breeds can honestly be called gentle giants. While it is true that they are heavier to lift and produce more “fertilizer,” their personalities are well suited for pet-hood. There are a few exceptions, of course. Checkered giants are both large and a bit Excitable. But Americans, American chinchillas, Beverens, English lops, Flemish giants, giant chinchillas, New Zealands, satins and silver foxes are all considered both large breeds and calm in temperament.

Salt Water Aquarium Maintenance

Posted: Thursday, October 20th, 2005 @ 9:19 am in Tropical & Salt Water Fish | No Comments »

Fishless cycling is the process of cycling a tank, or establishing a biological filter in a fishless aquarium.

The biological filter, or nitrogen cycle, naturally occurs over the first 4-6 weeks after a tank is set up. Cycling a tank is necessary to keep the water free of pollutants and the fish healthy, but while the filter is establishing itself, fish are exposed to toxic levels of ammonia and nitrite and often succumb to disease and death. Fishless cycling removes fish from harm by establishing the biological filter before fish are introduced to the aquarium.
